3/23/12: A Model’s Guide to Being Safe

A Model’s Guide to Being Safe

The world of modeling sounds exciting and fun but it is very vast and diverse with a dark and seedy side. We, at ReFresh, recognize that there are inherent risks involved so we have compiled a list of tips to ensure that you stay as safe as possible when pursuing your modeling career. Whether you are meeting people through ReFresh or via other avenues, these tips can be applied and used as a general guideline. Always remember, a good model is a smart model. Use your common sense and don’t be afraid to trust your instincts and say no!

Before agreeing or committing to work with a new client or agency

  • Ask for references or if working with a photographer, ask to see examples of past work.

  • Do a background check. Ask other friends or photographers you may know and also check the internet for company information. The internet can be a wealth of information.

  • Do not give your personal information out before doing a reference check and do not list your personal information on any public forums.

  • Avoid agencies or photographers with no verifiable address or phone number.

  • Never sign up to an agency without double-checking its legitimacy.

  • Prior to a photo shoot, clearly discuss and agree upon the subject matter of the shoot. It is a good idea to have an informal meeting with a photographer prior to a photo shoot (in a public place preferably).

  • Never let an agency or anyone pressure you into doing anything you are not comfortable with.

  • Never sign a contract without reading it and understanding its contents.

  • Remember the adage, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Beware of people who are scouting on the street and tell you that you have the “look”
Unfortunately, there are unsavory predators out there that target young aspiring models on the street or shopping malls, and tell them they have the “look.” They may ask for personal information or worse, try and get you to follow them somewhere.

ALWAYS ask for their business card so you can check out if they are a reputable agency or photographer. Do NOT go anywhere until you have had a chance to check their references.

When going to a photo shoot or meeting a prospective client

  • Drive yourself or have a friend/family member drive you.

  • Bring a chaperone. If no one can accompany you, make sure you leave an address, phone number and name of company or photographer you will be working for with someone you trust.

  • Bring a phone. Call family/friends if you are going to be delayed or if there is a change in plans.

  • if anyone makes improper advances or suggestions, leave immediately.

If you are a minor (under 18 years of age):

  • A parent or legal guardian should be involved in arranging all of your modeling work and projects.

  • A parent or legal guardian should always accompany you to any photo shoot or meeting with clients.

Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety, so be smart (we know you are) and always be safe!
