How to Create a Winning Slate Video for Your Audition

Your first audition notice or request from your agent or casting director, and they’re asking for a slate. But what exactly does that mean? Here’s a simple guide to help you create a slate video that will make a great first impression.

How to Create a Winning Slate Video for Your Audition:

So, you’ve just received your first audition notice or request from your agent or casting director, and they’re asking for a slate. But what exactly does that mean? An audition slate is a short introductory video where talent (actors or models) introduce themselves to casting directors. It serves as a initial introduction before casting views the actor or model's audition video.

Here’s a simple guide to help you create a slate video that will make a great first impression:

1. Setting Up:

  • Position your camera in landscape orientation (horizontal) for a professional look.
  • Choose a well-lit space with natural light and a plain background to avoid distractions.
  • Clear away clutter and ensure there’s enough room to capture your full body (head to toe) in the frame.

2. Wardrobe and Styling:

  • Keep it simple with solid colors and well-fitting clothes. Avoid bright patterns, logos, or accessories that could distract from your performance.
  • Opt for a natural look and simple hair and makeup to highlight your features without overpowering them.

3. Creating Your Slate:

  • Frame yourself from the chest and above and introduce yourself with your first and last name. Include any additional information requested, such as height, age, location, or representation.
  • Follow any specific instructions provided by the casting director, such as walking back to show a full-body shot or turning to showcase different angles.  Some will ask that you walk back to have a full body (head to toe) in frame and do a 360 turn.  Slowly and all the way around.
  • Some will ask for your angles.  While in the chest and above frame, turn to the right (completely) and pull hair back if necessary, turn to the left (repeat) and turn to the back, finish facing forward looking dead on into the camera.
  • For commercial castings, be prepared for auditions or script readings as per the instructions provided.

4. Saving Your Video:

  • Keep it simple by naming your video with your first and last name for easy identification.

Remember, the goal of your slate video is to showcase your current look, proportions, angles, and how you present yourself on camera. By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to make a memorable impression at your audition.

Happy Shooting!
